Call for Papers PARLAY 2014

After last year's great success, we are pleased to announce The 2nd Postgraduate and Academic Researchers in Linguistics at York (PARLAY) Conference. This one-day conference is designed to give postgraduates with an interest in linguistics from all research areas an opportunity to present and discuss their research in a friendly and intellectually stimulating setting at the University of York. Undergraduate students are also welcome to participate in this event. This year, PARLAY is being run as an interdisciplinary event by a committee comprised of researchers from the Departments of Linguistics, Education and Psychology.

The conference will be held on Friday 12th September 2014 in the Berrick Saul Building, which acts as a vibrant hub of research for postgraduates in the arts and humanities. A locally-sourced lunch will be provided, along with refreshments throughout the day. A conference dinner, to which all delegates are invited, will be held in York in the evening.

We invite postgraduate students and early career researchers to submit abstracts for oral and poster presentations on any language across a range of topics in language and linguistics. This may include, but is not restricted to:

Applied Linguistics * Conversation Analysis * Corpus Linguistics * Discourse Analysis * Forensic Linguistics * Historical Linguistics * Language Acquisition * Morphology * Phonetics * Phonology * Pragmatics * Psycholinguistics * Semantics * Sociolinguistics * Syntax

PLENARY SPEAKERS

We are delighted to welcome Professor Peter Sells (University of York) and Dr. John Williams (University of Cambridge) as plenary speakers for this event.

We are also pleased to announce that Elsevier's Publishing Connect workshop series will provide us with a 45-minute workshop entitled 'How to Get Published in Research Journals'.

Pictures of PARLAY

Hello my PARLovelies,

Ms Rachelle Price, photographer for the day, has excelled herself by not only producing excellent pictures, but by compiling them into this here little slideshow for your delight and delectation. Can you spot yourself? The photos will also be permanently viewable on the PARLAY 2013 page.

Verdict on PARLAY 2013 - a success!

First of all, the committee would like to (slightly belatedly) thank all the speakers, poster presenters and attendees for making PARLAY 2013 a confirmed success. We were all riding high on the day, but the feedback that you have given us (formally and informally) since has been both pleasant and very instructive to read.

We welcomed over 60 of you to the Berrick Saul Building and enjoyed 32 excellent oral and poster presentations. You came from all over the world, with visitors coming from France, Spain, Poland and even Japan - thank you for making that effort! In terms of your feedback, you were happy with the venue, the plenaries, the lunch and the organisation, and 100% of respondents would recommend PARLAY to others - thanks for that! We'll make an effort to improve on certain areas next year though, in particular the conference dinner and the poster session. Thank you again for your feedback.

Thanks are also due to our sponsors for the day - the LAGB, CModS and the HRC - and to all those who supported us in putting on PARLAY - the Department of Language and Linguistic Science here at York, Helen Jacobs and everyone in the Berrick Saul Building, the AV and IT services, and all our volunteers.

In related news, you also helped us raise £75.50 for the York bursary fund as part of the Project Snowball drive - it may not seem a huge amount, but it will contribute towards increased accessibility to a York education for students from low-income families, and for that, we thank you wholeheartedly.

If there are any other comments you'd like to make, don't hesitate to send them to parlayconference@gmail.com. And if all goes well, we'll see you back in York next September for PARLAY 2014!

Take care all,

The PARLAY Committee

Useful information for delegates

Hello all,

I just wanted to share this little link with you - the kind folks at IT services have gathered together information about the university including apps that you can download to help you navigate around. You'll also see instructions for logging onto Eduroam here if your home institution uses it (key tip: type in your entire institutional email address to get it to work properly, for example abc100@york.ac.uk instead of just abc100...I've fallen foul of that before!) If your home institution does not use Eduroam, we're working on sorting out wifi access for you too, fear not.

Looking forward to seeing you all in a matter of weeks!

Take care,

Becky (Webmaster)
